Breaking the Rules: How there’s no such thing as “Fashion Faux Pas” anymore

Style is perhaps one of the simplest outlets for self-expression. Fashion allows everyone the ability to express themselves, their thoughts, feelings and moods every day. Part of what makes fashion and style so wonderful is that everyone has their own personal preferences and unique choices when it comes to what clothing they want to put on. Those choices can be seen as a deeply intimate and private process for each person. Although it might not be like this for everyone out there, style is definitely a way to tell the world a little bit about yourself without saying a single word.

With that being said, it's well known that rules and regulations should have no place in either style or fashion. We’ve all seen those crazy looks that have walked down the runways and spiked interest at Coachella, but why does it still feel like the fashion world has set regulations? Why push to limit self-expression and personal taste in this day and age? The short answer; there shouldn’t be limits! In the past, style myths known as “fashion faux pas” have been known to be these style limitations and something no one should ever be caught dead doing. Well, it’s time to argue against these fashion myths and show that nothing should ever dictate your personal style! To start, check out the 6 main Fashion Faux Pas we debunked below to show you just how anything can be worn with virtually anything else!

1. Wearing White After Labor Day Fashion Faux Pas

The age-old myth of “can’t wear white after Labor Day” is no longer a set rule. Whether it's wearing white denim, white blouses or even white shoes, you should embrace it year-long. Winter White is more popular than ever; so no matter the season, white will always be in fashion.

2. Wearing Black with Blue

Whoever said mixing black and blue was a fashion faux pas is completely and utterly wrong. Black is a common color everyone wears, regardless of their taste. Mixing black with blue is que natural per the color scale, so stop being scared of pairing these two stunning colors with one another!

3. Wearing Black with Brown

This fashion myth is in the same vein as the black and blue one. We were taught at a young age that some colors compliment others better but that shouldn’t ever dictate what pieces of clothing we pair together. These two colors are both individually dark, rich and luxurious and can express those same feelings even stronger when paired together.

4. Mixing Prints

We all know there was a point in time in the fashion world when stripes and polka dots were seen as a sin to wear together. Thanks to huge luxury brands in the past couple years, patterns, prints and colors are now constantly being mixed together and are being applauded for such modernization and modifications to an old faux pas. So take a stab at combining your favorite statement pieces, we’re sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

5. Mixing Gold and Silver Jewelry

In the past, for one reason or another, it became an unwritten rule to keep silver with silver and gold with gold when it came to jewelry. Metallics should be equally loved, so break this “rule” by cleverly pairing your favorite long gold necklace with a dainty silver chain. There’s nothing wrong with switching things up.

6. Top Tied Around the Waist

The “tied sweater around the waist” look was a major style in the 90s that shortly after became a condemned practice for all. However, history repeats itself, so of course recently this faux pas look came back with the revival of athletics and sportswear. Popular name brands have tossed a flannel or light windbreaker around the waist of their catalog models and in one fell swoop brought this “sin” back to life. Plus, if the Kardashians can do it, so can you!

Let’s get rid of the term “fashion faux pas” once and for all. Whatever “rule” above you choose to break with your personal outfit choices, make sure you break it with confidence. Now that it’s 2020, we should all begin to never say never when it comes to style. Don’t feel like you have to try any of the above, but you should wear what you want to wear to fit your uniqueness. Forget all those heinous trends/faux pas and misunderstood rules; make your outfit your own no matter what it includes. After all, you only live once, right?!
